Bhavana Sangama or simply Sangama was the father of the brothers Harihara I and Bukka Raya I, the founders of the Vijayanagara Empire in present-day Karnataka, India.[1]

Biography

He was claimed to be of Yadava descent by later inscriptions of the Sangam dynasty. According to Ramchandra Chintaman Dhere, this was an attempt to claim Kshatriya status through Sanskritisation like the rest of South Indian dynasties who originated from pastoral (Kuruba) backgrounds by claiming Yadu to be their progenitor. [2] He was a chieftain and was married to Maravve Nayakiti, the daughter of the Kampili king Kampili Deva Raya and the elder sister of prince Kumara Rama.[3] [4] He had 5 children,[5] Harihara, Bukka, Kampa I, Marappa and Muddappa, who founded the Vijayanagara Empire (mainly by Harihara and Bukka)
