Bari (caste) explained

Bari or Baridar are a Hindu caste mostly living in Northern India.[1]

They practice Hindu rituals and worship Surya. In the hierarchy of Hindu caste system, they are counted as clean caste but not high status.[2] Those residing in Orissa mostly speak Bhojpuri language .[3]

Social status

Bari are listed as scheduled caste in Orissa and spread in districts of Sundergarh, Khurda, Balasore.They are also listed as Scheduled Caste in Madhya Pradesh,[4] Rajasthan.[5] Maharashtra,[6] [7] Uttar Pradesh,[8] Bihar,[9] Jharkhand,[10] Chhattisgarh also.

Occupation

Their traditional occupation is making leaf plates, known as pattal and Dauna. They are described by Russel & Hiralal as household servants and makers of leaf plates, from whom Brahmins accept water.[11]
