Baltasar Ebang Engonga Avomo (born 15 March 1978) is a former Equatoguinean public official who was serving as the head of the National Agency for Financial Investigation (ANIF).[3] His role involved managing financial regulations and investigations focused on preventing financial crimes, such as money laundering and corruption, in compliance with both national and international financial standards.[4]

Ebang is a nephew of President Teodoro Obiang Nguema and member of one of Equatorial Guinea´s elite political families.[5]

Career and education

Ebang's work at ANIF has placed him at the center of Equatorial Guinea's efforts to maintain financial oversight and transparency. His responsibilities included directing investigative procedures related to financial irregularities and enforcing relevant financial laws. He studied finance and economics at the University of Malabo.[6]

Controversy

In 2024, Ebang faced legal scrutiny and public backlash following allegations of corruption and misconduct.[7] Reports surfaced about the discovery of explicit videos involving women linked to high-profile individuals on his personal computer, which triggered an investigation by local authorities. The incident has intensified debates about the ethical standards expected from those in public service.[8]

On November 8, 2024, the Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang put into effect Decree No. 118, which criminally investigated and removed Ebang from his appointment as Director General of the National Financial Investigation Agency (ANIF).[9]

Public response

The case has generated widespread discussion within Equatorial Guinea,[10] highlighting concerns about governance and ethical accountability in public offices.[11] The unfolding legal proceedings continue to attract media attention, raising questions about the broader implications for the nation's leadership and regulatory institutions.

In Kenya, he is viewed as a hero and his actions caused a respected woman MP to defend him. Kenyan women are currently wanting to relocate and marry Equatorial Guinea men as Engonga gave them a sign of appetizing love-making. Many social media influencers, including Professor Maxwell Ochieng Odongo, defended his actions in Kenya and they say Engonga is now the de facto chairman of the Men's Conference 2025.
