Avocettina acuticeps, the southern snipe eel or southern fintail snipe eel,[1] is an eel in the family Nemichthyidae (snipe eels).[2] It was described by Charles Tate Regan in 1916, originally under the genus Leptocephalus.[3] It is a marine, deep water-dwelling eel which is known from throughout the southern regions of the ocean, with the exception of the eastern Pacific. It is known to dwell at a maximum depth of 2000m (7,000feet). Males can reach a maximum total length of 77cm (30inches).[2]
Avocettina acuticeps is not of commercial interest to fisheries.[2]
