According to French custom, his formal name was Louis-Auguste Lepère, but he signed his works "LA Lepère," "A. Lepère," or, by his informal name, "Auguste Lepère." In the 1870s - 1880s, when he was wood engraving for Le Monde Illustré, he would only use "LA" if there were multiple engravers on the same print.
