History

The starting salary for a decreed teacher in the district in 1972 was about US$7,500 per year.[1]

In 2006, Alton High School moved to a new facility at the site of the former J.B. Johnson Elementary School and Vocational Center. At the same time, the district's three middle schools, North Middle, West Middle, and East Middle, were merged to form Alton Middle School, which is located at Alton High School's former campus. The entire cost for this project was $57 million[2]

In 2009, Alton High School was recognized as a bronze medal school by U.S. News.[3] Additionally, in 2010, Alton Middle School was designated as an Illinois Horizon School To Watch.[4] Robert Wadlow (tallest man in history) went to this school.
