All that Glisters is a 1951 Australian radio play by Edmund Barclay. The original production starred Marcia Hathaway and Edwin Finn.[2]
The play was a romance about Bathurst during the Gold Rush days.[3] It was produced the celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Bathurst Gold Rush. The ABC specifically commissioned to Barclay to write the play for this occasion; commissioning plays was very rare at the time.
A copy of the script is at the Fryer Library.[4]
According to one account: "It takes place in an hotel owned by the middle-aged mellow Mrs. Carstairs, who has attractive daughter, Betty. Two young men are interested in Betty. One, to whom Betty is attracted, is Johnny Martin who has a good landholding. The other is Harry Oldroyd, who is a first-class saddle-maker. When the rush comes Johnny proposes to Betty then goes off to find a fortune. If he is to marry Betty, he says, he must have the money that will keep her in the finery she deserves. Harrys tays behiund... It is a shrewd story told through the lips of the hotel rouseabout, Old Jemmy, a cockney."[5]
