Alex Austin (born May 22, 2001) is an American professional football cornerback for the New England Patriots of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at Oregon State.[1] [2]
Austin was born and raised in Long Beach, California, where he attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School.[3]
Austin played at Oregon State for four years and put up 141 tackles, two going for a loss, a sack, four interceptions, 20 pass deflections, three fumble recoveries, and a touchdown.[4]
His career started when the Buffalo Bills drafted Austin with the 252nd pick in the seventh round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Shortly after, the Bills released Austin before getting signed to the Houston Texans practice squad. With some concerns in Austin’s play, the Texans released him. The New England Patriots jumped on the deal, and signed Alex Austin to their practice squad. Austin remained there until he was signed to the active roster of the New England Patriots. After being signed from the practice squad, Austin would appear in several games to patch a hole in a depleted and injured secondary group. Austin’s most memorable stat was an interception that came in week 17 against his former team, the Buffalo Bills.
Austin was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round with the 252nd pick overall in the 2023 NFL draft.[5] [6] [7] He was waived on August 29, 2023.[8]
On August 30, 2023, Austin was claimed off waivers by the Houston Texans.[9] He was waived on October 14 and re-signed to the practice squad.[10] He was released on November 1.[11]
On November 2, 2023, Austin signed with the New England Patriots.[12] Austin recorded his first career interception on December 31, 2023 in a Week 17 matchup at the Bills.[13]
