Advent Lutheran Church is a church affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America located in the Upper West Side, Manhattan, New York City. The church building was designed by the architectural firm of William Appleton Potter (1842–1909).
The Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Advent (DBA: Advent Lutheran Church) was founded in 1896 by German immigrants.
The church is involved in the AdventNYC hunger ministry, Music Mondays and additional music ministries, partnerships with local and international partners, and a commitment to justice for all people. In 2002, Advent Lutheran Church became a Reconciled in Christ Congregation. Additionally, Advent hosts Morningside AA, one of the longest running 12-Step programs in New York City.
The church building is a double-height brick and stone structure over a basement built in 1901. It has a pitched slate roof, and is notable in having all of its stained glass in the nave and clerestory designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and manufactured by his Tiffany Studios, which was also responsible for the ceramic mosaic behind the altar, the sanctuary lamps, the pews, and the painted decorative organ frontal pipes in the front of the sanctuary. The nave and clerestory windows, which feature St. Paul preaching at Athens and Christ returning in glory with angels, breaking swords beneath them and ushering in a reign of peace.[2]
The Tiffany windows restoration campaign, titled "Shining God's Light - the Tiffany Windows Project", has been ongoing since 2007, raising funds for a one-million-dollar complete restoration of all the Tiffany windows.[2]
Advent Lutheran runs a large food assistance program, distributing food each Saturday to the community. On the first and third Saturday of each month, Advent distributes groceries including fresh produce and eggs. On the second and fourth Saturday of each month, the church provides a hot and nutritious homecooked meal and a cold to go meal. On the fifth Saturday, working in partnership with Trinity Schools Advent distributes a cold sack meal. The program free and open to anyone in need, with no identification required.
In 2023, AdventNYC Hunger Ministry distributed over 500,000 meals to the community. Since 2019, AdventNYC Hunger Ministry has grown by 1009% and is supported by partners, grants, and individual donations.
