Abbey of St Marianus, Auxerre explained

The Abbey of St. Marianus (French: Abbaye Saint-Marien d'Auxerre) was a Benedictine, later Premonstratensian, monastery in Auxerre in the French department of Yonne in Burgundy. Established in the fifth century, it was the first monastery established in the diocese.[1] [2]

History

The abbey was founded as a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Saints Cosmas and Damian, but was later rededicated to Saint Marianus. It was destroyed during the Norman invasions of the 9th century. In the 11th century, it was rebuilt as a Premonstratensian abbey, which was destroyed in 1570.

The Abbey of St. Marianus was the first of four "daughter" foundations of Auxerre Cathedral, followed by those dedicated to Saint Eusebius, Saint Père (Saint Peter) and Saint Amator (Amâtre).[3] [4]
