The 2028 Copa América will be the 49th edition of the Copa América. The primary football competition will be between the national teams of South America. The competition, organized by CONMEBOL, is the oldest continental football tournament still running today. Argentina is the defending champion, having won its record 16th title in 2024.

Host selection

The host for the 2028 Copa América has yet to be announced. Potential candidates include:

According to the old host rotation order of CONMEBOL, Ecuador (whose last cup was in 1993) should organize the event. In the end of February 2024, at a meeting between CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez and government of Daniel Noboa, Noboa expressed interest in organizing the event.[1] [2]

Within the application, eight cities were proposed by the Ecuadorian government to receive the participating teams and host the matches: Quito, Guayaquil, Manta, Cuenca, Machala, Ambato, Riobamba and Salinas.[3]

Considering that the United States has greater infrastructure and greater purchasing power than each of the South American countries, it is expected to be confirmed as host in the next edition. According to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo, there would be a prior contract between the CONMEBOL and the United States Soccer Federation for the U.S. to host the tournament in 2024 and 2028.[4]

It has been speculated that Uruguay (in conjunction with Argentina and Paraguay) could host the tournament with the aim of enhancing and testing its infrastructure ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.[5] [6]
