The 2024 US Open is the 144th edition of tennis' US Open and the fourth and final Grand Slam event of the year. It will be held on outdoor hard courts at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City. Novak Djokovic and Coco Gauff are the men's and women's singles defending champions, respectively. It will begin with the preliminary rounds from August 19 to 22 followed by the tournament itself from August 26 to September 8 of this year.[1]
The tournament is an event run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and is part of the 2024 ATP Tour and the 2024 WTA Tour calendars under the Grand Slam category. The tournament is played on hard courts and takes place over a series of 17 courts with Laykold surface, including the three existing main showcourts – Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and Grandstand.
A new development has sparked a strong controversy around the adapted tennis players, because the tournament organizers have decided to omit the wheelchair tournament for this year, because some of players will instead be participating in the Paralympic Games in Paris 2024, which is a cause of controversy since both tournaments will be clashing.[2]
Among other things, the motto of the tournament is Celebrating the Power of Tennis, a motto chosen by the tournament organizers to encourage “the benefits of the cleanest sport in the world.”[3]
In the United States, the 2024 US Open will be the tenth year in a row under an 11-year, $825 million contract with ESPN, in which the broadcaster holds exclusive rights to the entire tournament and the US Open Series.
