The 2024 Tarqumiyah shootout was a drive-by shooting on 1 September 2024 in which three Israeli police officers were shot dead by gunmen from Hebron close to Tarqumiyah checkpoint. The shooting took place on route 35 in the Hebron Governorate of Palestine.[1] [2] [3]

Background

Amid increasing settler violence, Israel has attacked Palestinians in the West Bank since 28 August 2024, the largest incursion in the occupied territory in decades.[4] [5] The shooting followed two other attacks in Gush Etzion that occurred the previous day, including a car bombing and a roadside bomb. In all cases, the perpetrators were from Hebron.

Attack

Shortly after 9 a.m., three Israeli officers were killed in a drive-by shooting. The gunman later abandoned the car by the roadside and escaped on foot. A man and woman in their 30s and a man in his 50s were in critical condition and died shortly after.

Casualties

The three Israeli police officers killed in the attack were identified as Roni Shakuri, Arik Ben Eliyahu and Hadas Branch. Roni Shakuri, 61, was the father of Mor Shakuri, who was killed in the 2023 Hamas-led attack on Israel.[6]

Attacker

The shooting was carried out by a lone perpetrator, identified as a resident of Hebron born in Jordan who worked as a security officer for the Palestinian Presidential Guard until 2015. He was later killed by Israeli soldiers who besieged his home in Hebron.[7]

The Khalil al-Rahman Brigade claimed responsibility for the shooting, which was praised by Hamas.[8]
