On June 15, 2024, nine people, including two children, were shot at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad in Rochester Hills, Michigan. An 8-year-old boy was critically wounded from a gunshot to the head. The shooter fired around 28 times before fleeing the scene in his vehicle. He was discovered dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound at a home half a mile from the scene.[1] [2] The perpetrator was identified as Michael William Nash, an unemployed 42-year-old resident of Shelby Township who, according to both police and relatives, did not have a criminal record but had dealt with mental health challenges.[3] [4] [5]
Police describe the shooting as random, and stated that Nash had no connection to any of his victims.
On June 15, 2024, at around 5:00 p.m. EDT, the shooter pulled up in a vehicle at the Brooklands Plaza Splash Pad, a play area with water features intended for children.[6] The shooter exited the vehicle and proceeded to fire around 28 rounds, reloading twice, before fleeing the scene in the vehicle. Nine people were struck by gunfire, including two children, one of whom was an 8-year-old boy who was shot in the head. One witness described the shooter as using two handguns during the shooting, though this is not confirmed. A Glock 9-millimeter handgun and three empty magazines were recovered from the scene.[7]
Police were able to trace the shooter to Dequindre Estates, a mobile home community in Shelby Township, based on an address at which the discarded handgun was registered, around half a mile from the scene of the shooting. A 5 hour standoff ensued as police surrounded the property. After failing to make contact with the shooter, police breached the home with drones and personnel, and discovered the shooter dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A second handgun, which the shooter committed suicide with, and a semi-automatic rifle lying on the kitchen table was recovered from the home.[8]
The last of the injured victims, a mother who has two children that were also injured, was released from hospital on July 5, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds.[9] The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
