The 2024 Rhode Island State Senate elections will take place on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, with the primary election to be held on Tuesday, September 10, 2024.[1] Rhode Island voters will select state senators in all 38 seats of the Senate to serve two-year terms.[2]

The election will coincide with United States national elections and Rhode Island state elections, including U.S. President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, and Rhode Island House.[3]

Following the previous election in 2022, Democrats held a 33-to-5-seat supermajority over Republicans. However, Democratic Senator Frank Lombardo died on February 21, 2024, which resulted in a vacancy in the 25th district. Therefore, Democrats hold a supermajority of 32 seats compared to the five seats held by Republicans. Republicans would have to net 15 seats to flip control of the chamber.

Retirements

Three incumbents will not seek re-election.

  1. District 20: Roger Picard is retiring.[4]
  2. District 26: Frank Lombardi is retiring.[5]
  3. District 28: Joshua Miller is retiring.[6]

One seat was left vacant on the day of the general election due to death in 2024.
