On 24 May, Sheffield United announced their initial pre-season plans, including four matches against York City, Chesterfield, Harrogate Town and Rotherham United.[31] A fifth was later added, against Huddersfield Town.[32]

On 27 June, the draw for the first round was made, with Sheffield United being drawn at home against Wrexham.[34] In the second round, they were drawn away to Barnsley.[35]
