On 4 June, Crewe announced their pre-season preparations, with matches against Newcastle Town, Stafford Rangers, Stoke City, Tamworth and Blackpool.[20] Two weeks later, the club confirmed the squad would travel to Algarve for a five day training camp.[21]

On 27 June, the draw for the first round was made, with Crewe being drawn away against Rotherham United.[23]
