2023 World Draughts Championship Explained

The 2023 World Draughts Championship at the international draughts was held from September 28 to October 13, 2023, in Willemstad, Curaçao under the auspices International Draughts Federation FMJD. Twenty players competed in the tournament, which play as a round-robin.[1] [2] The winning prize for the tournament was 20,000 euros.

The tournament was characterized by a large number of changes in the list of participants, as a result of the suspension of the Russian and Belarusian Draughts federations, the coronavirus and visa problems.

Yuri Anikeev became world champion for the first time, one point ahead of Jan Groenendijk.

At the same place the Women's World Draughts Championship took place simultaneously.

The games were played in the official FMJD time rate was 90 minutes for the first 45 moves and 30 minutes for the rest of the game, followed by 30 min for the rest of the game with an addition of 30 seconds starting from 46th move. Conforming to the FMJD regulations, players were not allowed to agree on a draw before they both made 40 moves. If they did so nevertheless, the referee is obliged to decide on a 0-point for each player.

The final classification was based on the total points obtained. If two or more players had same total points to define the places, the following factors were used to define the places:
