The 2023 New York Yankees season was the 121st season for the New York Yankees franchise. The Yankees began the season on March 30 against the San Francisco Giants at home and finished the season on the road against the Kansas City Royals. They entered the season as the defending AL East champions.

After the Yankees re-signed general manager Brian Cashman in December 2022, the team announced Brian Sabean as executive adviser to Cashman on January 2, 2023. Sabean spent 30 seasons with the San Francisco Giants (four as executive vice president), leading the organization to three World Series rings in the 2010s. He previously spent eight seasons with the Yankees, first joining as a scout in 1985.^[2]

Despite starting off strong with a 48–38 record, the Yankees started to struggle, enduring losing streaks and going 34–42 the rest of the season. They failed to improve on their 99–63 record from the previous season after getting swept by the Atlanta Braves in late August falling one game below .500 for the first time this late in the season since 1995. After being defeated by the Washington Nationals, the Yankees had their longest losing streak since the 1982 season. They began to show improvement later in the season, but they struggled again as they fell back into .500. They were unable to repeat as AL East champions, due to the Orioles clinching the AL East. The Yankees were eliminated from playoff contention on September 24, missing the postseason for the first time since 2016.

The Yankees did manage to secure a winning record in their penultimate game when they defeated the Kansas City Royals on September 30. Their record of 82–80 was the team's worst since 1992, but nevertheless good enough to extend the longest active winning season streak in North American professional sports to 31 years.

The New York Yankees drew an average home attendance of 40,862 in 80 home games in the 2023 MLB season, the 2nd highest in the league.^[3]

Offseason

Rule changes

Pursuant to the CBA, new rule changes will be in place for the 2023 season:^[4]

• institution of a pitch clock between pitches;
• limits on pickoff attempts per plate appearance;
• limits on defensive shifts requiring two infielders to be on either side of second and be within the boundary of the infield; and
• larger bases (increased to 18-inch squares);

Transactions

2022

• November 15 – re-signed Anthony Rizzo to a 2-year, $34 million contract in free agency with a $17 million club option or $6 million buyout for the 2025 season (total of $51 million).^[5]
• November 18 – re-signed Isiah Kiner-Falefa to a 1-year, $6 million contract.^[6]
• November 18 – claimed right-handed relief pitcher Junior Fernández off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates.^[7]
• December 6 – signed right-handed relief pitcher Tommy Kahnle from the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 2-year, $11.5 million free-agent contact.^[8]
• December 7 – re-signed Aaron Judge to a 9-year, $360 million contract.^[9]
• December 15 – signed left-handed starting pitcher Carlos Rodón from the San Francisco Giants to a 6-year, $162 million contract.^[10]
• December 28 – traded relief pitcher Lucas Luetge to the Atlanta Braves for right-handed pitcher Indigo Diaz and infielder Caleb Durbin.^[11]

• March 29 – signed outfielder / first baseman Franchy Cordero to a 1-year, split-deal contract ($1 million in the Major Leagues and $180,000 in the Minor Leagues).^[13]
• March 30 – acquired right-handed relief pitcher Colten Brewer from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash considerations.^[14]
• May 19 – signed outfielder Greg Allen (second stint) from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Diego Hernández and cash considerations.^[15]
• July 31 - acquired right-handed relief pitcher Keynan Middleton from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for minor league right-handed pitcher Juan Carela.^[16] The team also acquired right-handed relief pitcher Spencer Howard from the Texas Rangers for cash considerations.^[17]
