Coolderry entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were beaten by St Rynagh's in the quarter-finals.[1] [2]

The final was played on 23 October 2016 at O'Connor Park in Tullamore, between St Rynagh's and Birr, in what was their eighth meeting in the final overall and a first meeting in 15 years.
