The 1902 Medal of the Spanish Gymnastics Federation also referred to simply as Medalla de la Federació and Medalla del Ayuntamiento was a football competition that was held in Barcelona between February and June 1902. The first edition used the league system and the second edition of the qualifiers.[1] [2] [3]

First edition

The City Council of Barcelona gave the Catalan delegation of the Spanish Gymnastics Federation a silver medal to be contested in the sports program of all kinds that this organization organized for 29 September 1901 in the Parc de la Citadel. However, although nearly 10,000 people gathered in the Plaza d'Armes of the park to see the matches Barcelona-Hispània and Català-Espanyol, the delivery of the medal finally did not was carried out, reserving it for the organization of an upcoming football tournament, whose preparations were carried out by Joan Gamper.

The competition, which was open to the second teams of all clubs and to those first who had not participated in the Copa Macaya that year, began to be contested by 9 teams: Irish FC, Iberia SC, FC Internacional, Catalonia FC, and the second sides of FC Barcelona, Hispània AC, Català FC, Club Espanyol, and Club Universitari, according to the names of the time, but only 7 teams finished the competition due to the withdrawal of Hispania and Universitari, all in the first round.[2] FC Internacional did not have its own field and played the six parties as a local on the grounds of the corresponding opponent.

Second Edition

As a result of the success of the first edition as well as of the Copa Macaya, and in short, of the consolidation of football in the city, the organizing committee of the Medal was encouraged to improvise a second competition as the end of the season. Initially, 6 teams were registered: FC Barcelona, Club Espanyol, Club Universitari, FC Internacional, Catalonia FC, and Catalunya FC.[3] Barcelona and Universitari declined, while Football Club Català signed up at the last minute. Since there were 5 teams, a preliminary round had to be drawn; Catalonia and Espanyol would face each other, the winner would advance to the semi-finals where Internacional awaited them, and the loser would enter the play-off to fight for third place. All the matches were played in the Plaça d'Armes in Ciutadella Park, on the 19th and 24th of June, morning and afternoon, in front of 3,000 spectators.[1]
