The 1840 Maine gubernatorial election was held on 14 September 1840 in order to elect the Governor of Maine. Incumbent Democratic Governor of Maine John Fairfield lost re-election in a third rematch against Whig nominee and former Governor of Maine Edward Kent.

General election

On election day, 14 September 1840, Democratic nominee John Fairfield lost re-election by a margin of 67 votes against his opponent Whig nominee Edward Kent, thereby losing Democratic control over the office of Governor to the Whigs. Kent was sworn in as the 15th Governor of Maine on 13 January 1841.[1]
