Üechtland Explained

The Üechtland (pronounced as /de-CH/, pronounced as /gsw/), alternatively spelled Üchtland and Uechtland, is a region in western Switzerland, where the cities of Bern and Fribourg are located. The French name French: Nuithonie ("land of the Nuithones") is rarely used.

The name for the region is obsolete; today, it is only used to distinguish Fribourg (de|Freiburg im Üechtland) from Freiburg (or German: Freiburg im Breisgau) in Germany. However, old documents also mention German: Bern im Üechtland or German: Verona im Üechtland, by which Latin: Verona, as a Latinized name for Bern, is distinguished from Verona in Italy (historically known in German as German: Bern and sometimes as German: [[walha|Wälsch]]-Bern).
