¡Viva la libertad, carajo! explained

"¡Viva la libertad, carajo!", sometimes shortened to "¡VLLC!",[1] is a catchphrase and campaign rallying cry associated mostly with Javier Milei, the president of Argentina and self-described anarcho-capitalist.[2] The phrase translates into English as "Long Live Freedom, Damn It!"[3] or "Long Live Freedom, Goddamnit!".[4]

Origin and use

Javier Milei is known for his political antics including wielding chainsaws as props, waving black-and-yellow flags associated with anarcho-capitalism,[5] and for his use of vulgar language.[6] [7] [8] [9] [10] Milei first popularized "¡Viva la libertad, carajo!"[11] [12] during his parliamentary run in 2021,[13] and then again in his 2023 campaign for the Argentinian presidency.[14] [15] He most often uses it as a concluding phrase in his speeches.[16] [17] [18] [19] He has also used it in captions on his social media posts, such as photos taken with American president Donald Trump and actor Sylvester Stallone.[20] [21] [22]

Film and Television usage

In 2024 a six-part docuseries about Milei is currently titled, "¡Viva la libertad, carajo!"[23]
